Back Deck Make-over!

Short on time (much gardening and more painting to do), this is the Cole's Notes version of my deck make-over:

Dull and in dire need of some sprucing up, I set out to brighten and whiten with what felt like forty coats of paint with a solid stain and one (yes one!) coat of a beigey stain on the deck floor. Why? Sheer laziness and nothing the purchase of a great outdoor rug (on sale for $31 at Zellers!) won't mask...

The handyman took the old top off his original table (and employing old Singer sewing machine legs he found in the woods many years ago). I spray-painted the legs silver for a change and he built a new table, which I promptly painted.

He also built new space-saving benches to replace our bulkier metal chairs and I picked up some great bright yellow chairs at Winners ( = T.J. Maxx/HomeGoods).

Moved everything around, bought a new barbecue cover for our start-of-season-new-purchase of one and re-used the stripey umbrella, now five years old.

Other details: cork placemats from Walmart, vintage blue vase from the Meads, and tulips bought for myself from the grocery store.

And that's that!

  6. Love that blue and your colorful umbrella! I sat in one of our outdoor chairs, that goes with our table set, and the webbing seat just gave way! I guess leaving it out over winters took its toll. Not sure if I want get another set or maybe just look for a couple of replacement chairs. I think the chairs option will be the least expensive way to go.

  9. "That's that" sounds so matter of fact, but this space turned out beautifully. The bright colors, the inspired use of an old sewing machine base for that great table, plus all the work. Hope that your family happily enjoys this space all summer long.

  13. I have a screened in porch with major needs. I hate the cobwebs and pollen that gets to it. Thanks for the bright pick me up, perhaps I can tackle the cleaning of the porch tomorrow.

  18. Hey, Linda I have whined this year about not having a screened porch, only a deck, but I just found a really nice umbrella at a yardsale & that's going to be my starting point to making my deck look prettier. I had let it go to the birds literally, their birdfeeder was making a mess.

But, I love the inspiration of what you've done on your deck. It's so bright & colorful & inviting. Well done! Maybe there's hope for mine too.

  26. Cole's Notes, eh? Here in the states we have CliffsNotes. Didn't know if you knew that. At first, I thought you were just remembering the name wrong! Then looked it up on Wikipedia.

  27. Hi Barabara,
I found the placemats in the area where they sell all of the placemats and seat cushions. I'm in Canada, so I am not sure if we get the same stuff. Good luck finding them, though!

And yes, Cole's Notes are the Canadian version of Cliff's Notes. Funny they are different! :0)
    Cheers,
    Linda
