Sarah's House, part two...

Although I haven't delivered on my threat to do a high/low post about Sarah Richardson's latest project, Sarah's House (in the country), I thought it might be fun to share more photos of her not-so-modest-but-entirely-inspiring farmhouse flip project. Maybe you can tell ME where YOU can find some of the things that she used for significantly less.

***********

Now, I love this yellow mirror. That's easy enough: paint + fleamarket mirror
Same goes for retrofitting an old dresser or dry sink as a vanity.

And this tub. Sarah was excited that she got it for "$200 people!" I think it is the most inexpensive item in the bathroom. I love that she painted its exterior yellow! I could live without the curtain fabric, though. It feels reminiscent of the nineties florals. But that's just me...

I LOVE the kitchen island in yellow!!! It is the best part of the room, in my opinion.
Is anyone else thinking those stools could have been better with something more industrial farmhouse? Not that I'm giving her advice or anything...I'm not an IDIOT!!

She did call me up to ask me how I did this to the stairs of my project:
(I'm kidding, of course!)

Funny, but she didn't think stick on house numbers was fancy enough for her version!

Now, your turn!!

  1. I have to admit, I was not blown away by this house - a little generic for me. Oh well, she is almost perfect in my book still. :)

  2. I can't believe the fabric was so crazy expensive (130.00 yd?). Still I didn't really like the tub, I liked the curtains more.

  3. I agree about the counter stools, they don't do it for me either. I lean toward your idea of farmhouse/industrial stools for that space.

  4. Why do you suppose she skipped the first riser/step and started numbering with number 1 on what is really the second riser/step? Am I confused here? Maybe a number eleven costs too much. :)

  5. I don't love the fabric for bathroom curtains, but I like everything else. I think she's just the cat's meow. This is the first season I've seen.

  6. Linda, Thank you for posting yellow... my very favorite color. That bathroom and tub make my knees weak! And the kitchen, I agree with you. I'm not too fond of the new trend of light wood floors. At least not in this kitchen. But so beautiful just the same.
So nice to visit you tonight.

  7. I'm with you on the stools. I love Sarah Richardson, I'd love to have her job and her budget!

  8. I'm not lovin' those curtains either (not my taste); however, I think they worked in the bathroom. Personally, I wouldn't want a claw foot tub either, but it does go w/ the house. Love the yellow kitchen cabs, but not diggin' the barstools either. They look to 70-ish for my taste. Not really crazy about the polka dots either, but the gray (in the house) did work well w/ the yellow. Was glad to see she had a show back on HGTV.

  9. Too 70-ish. Sorry for the spelling error. UGH!

  10. I'm with you, not loving the stools at all, nor the curtain fabric. In fact, as much as I've loved everything I've seen Sarah do so far, I'm not feelin it with this house. I think you hit the nail on the head, it's a little to 90's for my taste. Of course, she's the international superstar and I'm not so what do I know?
Thanks so much though for posting about it, we're so behind here! Kerri xx

  11. I'm with you Linda...not lovin this. You could do so much better!!

  12. I agree with you on your comments. The curtains are dated, the stools could have had more life/character and I am not crazy for the stair colors at all. And, was she only trying to copy the "10" steps you have? She clearly has 11 steps and only numbered 10. I guess the first step doesn't count?

    Anyway, the yellow is lovely.

  13. $200 is actually crazy cheap for that tub if it was in usuable condition. Mine was embarrassingly expensive.

  14. I still love Sarah and what she does.

  15. Tammy, I was totally kidding about her calling me! But thanks for having faith in me! :0)

Sarah, that is a bargain for sure. Especially when it was considerably less than those gorgeous taps. I want a clawfoot and will definitely go to a (used) renovation center. Someday...

Sarah is the bomb and her work is generally unrivalled, in my opinion. I just think she has lifted the roof off of what is affordable for the "average" homeowner. We can definitely copy her looks, but I would love to see her do a flip with a realistic budget. i know she could do it and make it look just as great!!

  16. I love the yellow tub it looks great

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well I like the yellow mirror and the yellow tub. Dislike the faucet in the bathroom...unnecessarily splashy on a few levels imho. I agree with you on the chair fabric...it could have so much more presence.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think its fresh and pretty! In fact I love those polka dot chairs and the fabric in the bathroom. I'm getting a little tired of the darker woods right now anyway. I need something lighter and happier!

  19. Great blog!! I thought the kitchen was very well done but would love to know what range Sarah opted for?

  21. I saw the bath episode and was pretty shocked when she insisted that she could splurge on the fabric at $130./yd. Gulp, big gulp!

  22. I saw this bathroom on HGTV! I actually like the curtain, I thought it made the bathroom unique!

  23. Love Sarah Richardson and love this house so far. The fabric in the bathroom is gorgeous.

  24. Hi Linda!

I love everything Sarah does, period. Her design aesthetic so closing matches mine that if, in a perfect world, I could pick a designer - any designer to do my home from top to bottom, it would be HER! I love the tub - agreee, not so much the stools.

Loved your gracious and oh so flattering comments regarding my birthday! So nice to hear from you!

I love following all that this 'life' is bringing you! So excited for you. Well deserved, not to mention inspiring!

  25. the house is a dump and those chairs suck.

    totally joking.

  26. I love Sarah's House. I have been following along on HGTV and her remodel. I love her mudroom and I like certain elements in the bathroom. I loved the old distressed piece she used for the vanity. I am in love with the claw foot tub...the yellow isn't what I would want for me...a beautiful soft blue...I too will have a claw foot one day...looking on Craigs all the time! ;) I don't care for the barstools but love the island. It is fun to see what she does, but I do agree a much more realistic budget. I was just thinking today of curtains I will be making in the parlor/dining room and I think it was $17 a yd for the fabric...I will use a 50% to get it to the price I want...never more than that! lol Thanks for sharing!

    Hugs to you,
    Victoria

  27. I'm not diggin' this house as much as the houses Sarah did the other three seasons of the show. I'm not a fan of yellow, so right there the bathroom and kitchen don't really do it for me.

On the other hand, I really like the two bedrooms Sarah & Tommy did on this week's episode. Although I'm pretty sure they could have spent a lot less money decorating them!!

  28. i agree with you about the kitchen chairs. i love the wood tone against the yellow, but i would recover in a dark grey pinstripe or polkadot

  29. As a chronic stair counter, I love the numbers!! It's one of my little OCD traits...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I actually really liked the bathroom. I don't understand why fabric like that should be so expensive. That just doesn't make any sense to me! I love her style but it seems each house is looking the same to me but I guess that is why they call it a signature style!!!! I know I could do the whole thing for a fourth of her budget but I'm sure it wouldn't look as professional as she is an expert and I'm, well...just me!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The house isn't me but I like it. I don't care for the stools in the kitchen but I don't mind anything else.

It is not my style but very pretty to look at.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's funny, Linda... I thought of YOU when I saw Sarah's stairs!! Don't you love having your design style being copied? HaHa! Very fun!!

  33. Ok...I'm a little behind, but just watched Sarah's show doing the kitchen and after watching it....I have to say I got it....although yellow is not my favorite color...anywho, I just love Sarah and she can redo my 130+ yr old farm house any day:)

  34. I didn`t think this house was a flip. I was a little disappointed with her dining room and living room but love everything else.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love LOVE this show. I will admit though that although I think she is a fantastic designer, I'm not sure I would hire her. Did you notice how hard it is for her to stay on budget and how her budget always seems to expand?? She would design a wonderful home for me and then I would have to sell it to pay her bill. :)

  37. It's obvious Sarah loves patterned fabrics, but I though the yellow (and graphite!) fabric for bathroom curtains was YUK, but the finished bathroom looked beautiful with those yellow curtains. The overall look was quite amazing actually, I was impressed!

  38. Oh my goodness..I feel horrible but I was just scrolling through and saw those stools and knew right away those were Sarah's. I was soo excited because I have been so obsessed with those polka dots and with the yellow..yes please. I guess it makes me feel better that Sarah chose them even though everyone else thought they were so..so. I am redesigning my guest bedroom in those colors because of it...on the search for some polka dot sheets in the same color:).

  39. I love the way the stairs where customized.
    Nice idea!

  40. I love Sarah Richardson's ability to embrace change in pre conceived ideas without loss of passion for a project. That is a very important lesson that I take from her shows. I am referring to her 'was to be blue bathroom' and her new extension 'main bedroom'. Being flexible and not stew on what was originally planned but fully embrace the change is just like a breath of fresh air or breath of fresh teaching. Thank you Sarah for showing us that flexibility of design is a tool on its own.

  41. I was wondering, what does Sarah do with the house once she is done? Do she sell it fully furnished? Who would buy such a fancy house out in the middle of nowhere?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anyone know the name of the fabric she used on the dining room walls? My son turned me on to this show, he called to say there was someone with my taste who was doing a farmhouse...my taste, but not my tiny pocketbook! Love it all, she and Tommy are the best.

  43. sarah house show make me puke, the show's cute and eye catching, but whos paiding for the renvo-sarah, show, hgtv or the canada taxpayer. After watching a few episodes, it becomes "sarah's gone wild in wonderland" with spend, spend. Not like the other shows- income property, property vigins...there's content and meaning that viewers can relate to.

  44. Loved the soft yellow and graphite fabric in the bathroom. Who cares that it cost $130yd. it was worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love this show and her style! She really mixes it up! I would love the yellow and graphite fabric for a project of my own. Does anyone know where I could find it?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow harsh remarks....are we forgetting that we all do not have the same taste in decor? I happen to love everything she does, her personality and Tom as well! She doesn't do the same ole matchy- matchy that a lot of other designers do, she knows how to tastefully mix it up. I guess were all entitled to our opinions, thats why there are so many of these shows on now.....someones watching!

  47. I loved the bathroom. It is different and charming and welcoming. The fabric is from Sanderson and called etchings and roses.(free samples can be ordered from them) You can buy it online from other sources like Decorators Best for under $90 a yard. But if you want cheaper and very similar. Go to Joann Fabric online and Waverly has almost the exact same for $24 a yard. It is called Garden Tour in the Cornsilk color. Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  48. The fabric on the dining room walls is called Lotus Garden in lacquer by F. Schumacher. It can be found at the Inside Fabric website for about $ 150 a yard

Thank you for the information on where to get the fabric Sarah used in the bathroom. I did find it at Joannes and ordered it. I received it the other day and I love it! Thanks for your help!

  50. $700,000 for a remodel and 1500 additional square feet? That is an ABSURD amount for what she ended up with. And what makes the hose worth $1.5 million? Is it sitting on oil?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love everything Sarah does and like another above I really liked the bar stools in the gray. I think the polka dot gave them a touch of whimsy in an otherwise slightly formal kitchen. The oil cloth could be wiped off easily. What I like about design shows is that we can take cues from them, build on what we like and throw out the rest. I loved the yellow and have added a bit to my neutral palate because of this episode. When I watch it is for inspiration knowing that I may not be able to afford her choices. I live in reality...that is why I love the blogging world - yours included!

  52. I am getting the yellow fabric --- I love it --and now it's cheap )or cheaper) ......she is the best!

  53. I loved, loved, loved the fabric Sarah used on the headboard with blue flowers white background and brown leaves any idea where i could find it?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love everything she does...so tasteful.

  55. I love almost all things Sarah!!
I was inspired by the yellow curtains in the bath. I have a mid-80's master bath. In April 2011 I did an update. I went with a similar design fabric as the yellow fabric in the farmhouse bath but in a lilac & taupe floral ($49.00 yd). I had the ceiling scraped, wallpaper removed, new lighting and fan installed but kept the old tub, sink and tile floors. Painted the walls a dusty slate/lilac and had a custom lined shower curtain made with a matching Roman shade. Used a bowed style curtain rod. Not a new bath but a great update for under $1000. Looks like a new bath!

  56. I'm a huge fan of Sarah's, and to the people who complain about what she sells her houses for, the proof is in the pudding, people. She SELLS her houses, therefore, that is what they are worth. If they wouldn't sell, do you honestly think she would've been permitted to begin a 4th season of Sarah's House?

Case in point. Check out her latest house (this is season 4, as yet unaired, but will in 2012). It just sold for over a million. Don't know how much she spent, but you can bet it was less than what she paid for it.

    Check it out!
