A Kindred (Kitchen) Spirit...

I love a pretty kitchen. I have never felt the need to have a sleek, grand kitchen. I guess I feel that being comfortable and relaxed in a room that I spend a whole lot of time in is more important than feeling elegant while cooking or zen-like. Give me some open shelving, great colour, a comfy place to sit and a generous dose of pretty and I am in my element.

Victoria, of Whimsy by Victoria and I share a love of that aesthetic, and the kitchen in her new home is so lovely I could just knock on the door, enter in and feel at home. Pretty lighting, fabrics and fresh interpretations on old classics have led to a wonderful make-over of a previously tired and uninspired space.

Here is the before of her kitchen:

And now, with Victoria's warm touches:

I love your style and that is why you are under my Inspirations...I agree, it is all about comfort, inviting friends and family in and sharing a great meal where you could laugh and enjoy. I adore you!! This meant so much to me and so glad I have been able to meet such a kindred spirit through blogging.

  6. OK
So, I literally just came in from hanging at the neighbors house, having no idea where any of my children are (plus two more I am "watching") looking through a stack of her Rachel Ashwell books, oohing and ahhing. I was talking about the trouble I have decorating..how I KNOW what I love, but I can not seem to put it in a space.

I LOVE THIS KITCHEN!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS WHAT I WANT!

I have a GREAT project for you. After I find my new home in CT, how about you...or you find someone...to decorate it for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Isn't that a great idea??????????????

    I think so.

  7. I've been leaning toward this look for so long but have never attempted it because I've always had darker cabinets. Do you think you can still have the overall "feel" and look and still have oak cabinets? The house we just bought has the oak cabinetry, and it's not the standard builder grade quality either. They're top of the line and I'd hate to paint them, but would love the look of a cool, white kitchen. What do you think?

  16. What a wonderful makeover!! Love the blue & white colour scheme, it's so soft and pretty :-) Victoria has done a great job of taking a typical builder's kitchen and transforming it into a cozy cottage-style kitchen.

  21. Hello, I love the kitchen! Can you please disclose where you got the shelves from? They are exactly what I'm looking for. Also, I have the builder grade oak cabinets. Do you think it would be hard to refurbish them? Thanks a bunch!

  22. To MRG: I passed on your question to Victoria and this was her response:

"I bought pine wood planks as close to the measurements I needed at Home Depot or Lowes. Added wood trim I liked and mitered it to fit around the shelf. I then used wood glue to hold it in place and then using my nail gun (or if you don’t have one you can do finishing nails) nailed it on. I then primed and painted the shelves. Added some mocha glaze to give it an antiqued look. The wrought iron brackets I found at Hobby Lobby. They were a brown rust color and decided to tone it down with the same paint I used on the shelves. Sanded some of the paint off to give it a distressed look. The whole project cost about $30 to do the two shelves if you buy the brackets on sale.

As for your cabinets, mine too were oak builder cabinets that I sanded lightly, primed and painted with a light sanding in between coats with 220 sandpaper to get the best look. I then have added knobs and handles to drawers and doors. My husband routed out some of the door panels to add glass. You can have a glass co. do that for you if you don’t have a router or check to see if someone you know might do it for you. I would love to know what you end up doing with yours.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to e-mail me: whimsybyvictoria@comcast.net I would be happy to do a future tutorial on the shelves if you would like. Thank you!"

    Hugs,
    Victoria
