My BlogSpot...

I'd really like to show it to you, but it is a changeable location depending on my mood. The handyman noticed that one day, and decided I needed a new desk area from which to work. I have several writing projects on the go and truly need a more professional place to work from than my kitchen table or counter. I have even been known to work from the living room sofa, which we all know doesn't spur the most creative thoughts, especially when a good program comes on the television.

Can you say distraction??

The great thing about working from home is that you get to work from home: you can wear slob clothes if you want, drink all the coffee you like, and don't have to go out and scrape off a frozen windshield first thing in the morning.
.
The bad thing about working from home is that you are working from home: you wear slob clothes too often; are faced with all of the family distractions and housework staring at you and pulling you away from your work; the fridge is too nearby; and people feel like it is no big deal to interrupt you at any given time to help them find their keys or make them a sandwich. Still, I know when I have a good thing going on...

While I have had a few decorating clients that I have been focusing on recently, soon I am going to have to focus almost solely on my writing jobs. Soooo, I really need that new desk!!

The handyman has a plan in mind and wants it to be reflective of the style of my kitchen island, since my desk will be situated not too far from it (I can't do the basement office thing anymore, either...it's too depressing).

I have my eye on a fancy new chair for it, with comfort and looks in mind, and now am faced with the big debate:

What colour should I paint my desk??

Any ideas??

The handyman is rooting for black with a wooden top; Sophie thinks it should be pink; and I am inching towards choosing a really sunny, vibrant yellow, just to offset all of the cool shades of blue in here.

(not really a desk, I know)

What do you think? Where on the colour wheel should I head??

  1. I personally love red! I love a pop of red in a room and in fact almost every room I decorate in my home will have just that...some pops of red. It is happy and whimsical that just makes you smile...every time you go to be at your desk you would feel inspired. I also have your beautiful chair in mind...fun vibrant colors in it! I like the yellow too...you could even do a fun apple green. Call me crazy...I still like the red. Is that chair a pink or more of a tan? I wasn't quite sure...depends too of what color you can do your chair in. :) Just my thought...I know either way it will be beautiful...oh, I love the shape and style of the yellow desk!

  4. Go with whatever color makes you feel relaxed but ready to write. A color that pulls you in and puts you in the right frame of mind. Whatever color that is will go with your kitchen.

  5. I see lots of kitchens on lots of blogs, and I have to say that I'm pretty smitten with that one right now. It's simple and perfect. Are those cupboards powder blue or is it the light?

  7. hi linda i find that i do my best writing in bed at night on the laptop or during the day in my office/ebay room :) which is really getting filled. i would go with a neutral pallette, you don't want to fill your brain with too much of an exciting color, it'll take away from your creative writing, although if you're like me, when you have something to write about, there's no stopping you :) gio

  8. What fun options! Let's see, how about black legs and a pale blue top. I'm thinking you could add a table skirt around the legs with a fabric with a colorful combo of all your yellows, blues and possible black! Add a pale yellow pen cup and your set! Can't wait to see what you do!

  9. I'm with the handyman, Linda. I think the yellow might be too much. Although, you could always bring yellow in with your desk accessories, if you have your heart on bringing some yellow in. Can't wait to see what you do!

  10. I have been into the mustard color lately, a little country a lot modern with gold undertones. Seems like a neutral to me as it takes the responsibility (spelling) of brown in my mind. I have tried two mustards that were too bold and finally have found one that hits my taste well. Let me know if you need the BM color.

  11. Hi Linda! I really love your blog. Your kitchen is so pretty. I think any of the options you mentioned would look nice, and I agree that whatever you choose bringing in yellow either through accessories or paint would be a nice addition to all the blue. You have such a great style I'm sure whatever you do will be lovely.

  12. Congratulations on doing what you love full time! What do you think about a painted historic grey sanded back/antiqued to reveal black below to tie in with the black island or a grey wash and a wood top that matches the island as mentioned. You could bring in colour on your chair or on an inspiration/bulletin board that has nail head detail to tie in with the grey on the desk. That chair is so your style, classic and pretty. Whatever you choose will no doubt be a stunner. Good luck!

  14. Since I love the color yellow, I could easily vote for that one. Since I know nothing about color, I shouldn't allow myself a vote. That vibrant a yellow? How about one a notch above the value of your blue? There I go voting again when I don't know nothing!

  15. I vote Robin's Egg blue with a wooden top. Of course I'm obsessed with that color right now, so it's my first choice for everything.

  16. The yellow sounds beautiful but I think anything too bright would probably overpower the room.

  17. green...there are some really neat green
colors out there and you have no green in
    your house....do it

  18. I would keep it neutral in black or white. I'm really liking the black accents right now.

  19. A deeper turqouis would complement your kitchen without blending in too much. Or the pink would be my second choice if you want to go bold. Love the chair, but not so sure how comfy that desk will be for writing. Where do you put your legs?

  20. What about green?

  21. Castors on the chair and a soft butter yellow.

  22. I'd go for a pale or butter yellow. I think that would look great with all the blue you've got!

  23. I have noticed a design trend of just the right orange with blues. Its a retro orange that would look great with your colours. But if it were me,I would go off white with a wooden top for the desk and get the oronge or pink punches of colour in the chair upholstry instead.Put a few orange or pink accesories in your kitchen to pull it together.I daydream about working from home.I could do most of my job from home if my boss would let me.....maybe she knows I'm a daydreamer LOL !

  24. I'm not sure, but it seems to me the problem is your blue is a little bit of a gray-blue and the yellow is not, so they don't seem to go together. If you picked a more grayed yellow (e.g. softer) then you would be fine, or a darker version of the blue you already have, it would work. Just a thought, and I'm no expert. You might want to check out Maria's great blog, Colour Me Happy (http://colourmehappyblog.blogspot.com/) as she did some posts on this issue awhile back.

  25. I think that your desk would look great in a nice aqua (more of a darker shade/almost bluish or a very diluted teal) because with the blue, you have the 'sea' colors going on in there. I was in Big Lots the other day (not sure if you have those in Canada), but saw a black kitchen island, with sides you can pull up, and thought about getting one for my room over the garage b/c I don't have an office either, and with a couple of bar stools, it seems like it would be a good place for the kids to draw, color, etc. and it has storage underneath with drawers and cabinets.

Finally got my hands on a copy of FMS. Was happy to see you mentioned there. What a fun job you must have! :o)

  27. If it were me, it would be red. Red is a neutral around here.

With your blues, you can do any pastel, black, white or brown. You're the decorator. We take our cues from what you do, not the other way around. ;)
