Dreaming of Slipcovers...

above photo: Country Home.com

My living room is still in need of two things: an area rug (which I refuse to buy until I can find one that I both love and can afford) and a new slipcover for the comfy armchair in the corner of the room. While it is not offensive in any way, it doesn't reflect my style. I bought it because it was the nicest one in the furniture store at the time, and it fit the requirements of what I was looking for in a chair.
As I search for the perfect fabric (again, one that I love and can afford), I find myself browsing beautiful sites online where the slipcovers leave me longing for something equally lovely. Patience is not my virtue, but it seems I will have to master it anyway...
Now, for your viewing pleasure:

I think I am leaning towards a powdery blue fabric, with a piping in a fun, retro fabric. I'll see what I can find...

  1. My sofa and chair both need new slip covers, but just like you I will not buy one until I find just the right fabric and price...who knows it could be years! :o)

  2. Today is a very big day in the Where’s Wenda? Contest. I am visiting all of the SITS followers. Can I do it? There are around 1000 followers. Oh my! Better grab my cup of coffee and get on my way. Be sure to visit Hot Chocolate Caramel Mocha and Three Bay B Chicks as part of your contest entry.

  5. I am a HUGE slipcover fan. In fact I think I am going to pull out my white one for my sofa today. I need to edge spring on a little. And when I can afford it, I will be buying my living room rug (and all my rugs!) from the Woven Cotton collection of Dash & Albert. They are just the best, hands down.

  8. Now are you going to sew the slipcover.. or will you buy a ready-made if you find one in a fabric you like. I have a wing-back chair that desperately needs to be recovered. I just can't find anything I like.. Well. It's more than that.. The sofa and the other chairs need to be freshened up as well.. and I can't decide what to do. If I recover one, do I go with the existing color scheme or do I just rebel and do all of them in something totally different. Decisions. *sigh*

  9. Has anyone sewed their own slipcover? I have some sewing experience and I'd like to know if anyone has ever tried sewing a slipcover and where they got a pattern.

I am so with you on the area rugs. I want one for our dinning room but they are way too $$$$.

  10. I have sewn my own slipcover for a chair, loveseat and my sofa...and have a tutorial on my blog! It's not as hard as one might think. Just think puzzle pieces and putting them together. Great inspiration photos!

  12. Hope that you find just what you want for the right price. Hope, too, that patience wins out. So often, we do something we don't really want because we have run out of said patience. Recently, I spent some time at

    http://www.bestslipcovercompany.com/

but I don't think that they have what you need, especially with regard to color.

Thanks for all the lovely photos...why am I suddenly so drawn to that green?

  17. Good luck with your slip-covering. I wish I had a cheap seamstress. I really need to find someone who works from home and sews for love!

I know what you mean about a rug. I think buying "good enough" is the story of my life (due to impatience and limited availability of beautiful things on a budget). But I am trying to be more patient. I don't think you will ever find a rug you love and can afford. I believe those are mutually exclusive. 99% of rugs are ugly. I hate rug shopping above everything else as they are so impossible to source as both beautiful and affordable.

Dash & ALbert had some pretty rugs (email them for Canadian sellers) but prices are high. I love my office rug from Ikea.

One suggestion, which I am going to do myself, is to get a flooring store to make you a rug from carpet. It costs about $700-800 for something 8x10 or 9x12 in a nice carpet (wool). They charge you per square foot for the carpet cost and then a binding cost per linear foot. That way you can do a solid rug in the perfect shade, for example. I regret not doing it for my living room (i did a pattern, which i regret).

I'm going to do this for a hall runner, so I can get a custom length.

Most carpet rolls are 12 ft wide, but some come wider.

    Good luck in your quest!

  18. I can totally see a powder blue chair in your living room - an I like the idea of a retro-patterned trim. Sounds great! Now get to it!! :-)

It's kind of ironic... I have a client I'm working with right now who says NO to some of my temporary ideas... she wants to hold out until she can afford exactly what she wants. I get frustrated because, in the same breath, she wants it to look great! I tell her I can make it look great with a few inexpensive, temporary things! Aye!! The irony - I'm exactly the same way!! I need everything for my living room and won't buy until I can get what I want for the price I'm willing to pay! Maybe I should give my client a bit of slack, hey?! :-)

  20. I just love slipcovers, I have one on my sofa, and when I want a change I just find a new one that fits in with my style. I find mine on Ebay from surefit and they have great prices. I am on the hunt for one for my wing back chair. Good luck on your hunt, I love the hunt, don't you...
