Well, there's nothing like a good post holiday quiet to inspire a girl to embark on a make-over. Of course, while most have a different kind of make-over in mind after Christmas, I like to keep things do-able. So, a make-over of Sophie's room was what I set out to do.
(before)
You may remember
Sophie's room before (above) - and its more sugary appeal - replete with pompom fringe all around the perimeter of the room.

While I enjoyed it while it lasted, the paint colours never thrilled me...they were slightly
off. Almost right, but all wrong to my eyes as I stared down the hallway to her room from my perch in the living room.
Because her walls were looking a bit worse for the wear, I felt I could justify a paint job...though I didn't relish doing it. I chose a soft aqua blue (Benjamin Moore 2056-70), and I decided to spice it up with a bit of red.
After:

I repainted her sleigh bed and dresser, and quieted it down from a pale yellow to a warm white (Benjamin Moore OC-63).

Because pink is her favourite colour (
signature colour, if you will), her pink accents remained, and I shopped from around the house to add in the red.

I picked up her curtains and coordinating pillows at Wicker Emporium (Canadian), for $15/panel; and recovered the little bench for her dresser with some fabric I bought last spring. She loves purses, so it was a perfect change.
This little area was left virtually unchanged, though I recovered the stretcher frame with a dotted sheet of scrap-booking paper, and took down her baby sweater and replaced it with an April Cornell dress that she wore last summer.
I hung a framed red work pillowcase bearing the wish, Good Night, above her bed and it just might be my new favourite element in the room.
I also made pink tissue paper zinnias, from a Martha Stewart kit, and hung them from Sophie's ceiling using clear line.
I love how they hang whimsically, with no real purpose but to look pretty.
Other elements include the lamp shade I bought from Ikea, that I tied a ribbon around just because...
...and her pet Beta fish,
Beluga - well, even his fish bowl got a make-over:
The only thing left to do involves a project my husband started, but has not yet completed. I will show you it as soon as it is finished. A little wood, fabric and paint, and I think it will be the perfect spot for Sophie and her friends.
Will I ever do over the boys' rooms? Not likely. They have zero interest in redecorating their spaces, and are happy as long as their rooms are comfortable, functional, and a good place to hang out in. In other words, I am to let sleeping dogs lie...or something like that!!
All in all, I love the combination of aqua, red, white and pink and I will tweak as needed until it feels as it should. Sometimes a paint job to freshen things up is all the excuse you need to embark on a fun make-over. My only advice is to try to work with what you have, shop from your own home, and try old things in new places. Move some furniture around and rummage through your linen closet.
Not all make-overs have to drain your bank account!!
I love it, it looks amazing! I love that you even did the fish tank!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so pretty! I have two boys and they aren't so in to their rooms. When they were little one had a cabin room and the other had a rainforest room with a boat bed! My husband can get pretty creative with rooms!
ReplyDeleteLinda, Sophie's room looks great. Wow, you are a fast decorator. It takes me months to get my head around buying a $100 rug! It looks awesome and the red is a nice punchy bit. I especially like the curtains!! xo Terri
ReplyDeleteIt looks absolutely delicious!!! Red is my favorite color but when used as the main color it can have an in your face kind of effect.....the little burst are great!!!
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of aqua; I really like the curtains. Wonderful job! I'm sure the Beta enjoys it too.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Sandi
That is a very VERY cute room! I want to paint so bad but I can NEVER choose a color :(
ReplyDeletelooks great. i love the curtains! i have that (i believe) EXACT same bench you recovered with the purse fabric...it's our piano seat/bench. i'm thinking i'll recover it now! many blessings!
ReplyDeletegotta love a budget makeover, I love it, you've pulled it together beautifully, a knack that's much easier said than done don't you think...

That looks wonderful. Reminds me of a magazine pic I came across a couple years ago, which integrated aqua, red, and a bit of pink in a little girl's room. It's a great combination!
ReplyDeleteIs her white bedspread from Simply Shabby Chic? It looks like the one I just bought for my daughter, and I love the ruching on it.
Your blog is so fun to read and look at. You have great style and ideas!
funny..we just moved and the only room I have done is my BOYS ROOM!!!!!! My poor girls keep asking when I am going to make their room beautiful! This has inspired me....
ReplyDeleteThat looks fabulous! When can you do my room!?! BTW I LOVE that lamp.

ReplyDeleteWow! What a transformation! Love the wall color! Love the white furniture! Love the Ikea lamp! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I hope to do my daughter's room in aqua, red, pink and green when we move in the next few months. I have to find those curtains/pillows. Do they have a brand, or is there a US equivalent to the Wicker store? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI noticed the aqua and red color scheme on some Christmas decor this year and loved it...very crisp but still cozy. Love how all of yours turned out!
ReplyDeleteI love the makeover, and I so agree with the not draining the bank account part!
ReplyDeleteLooks so pretty! I really like the new color scheme, and those curtains are wonderful! I am sure your Sophie will have many sweet dreams in her newly decorated room :)!

ReplyDeleteI really really like it. Way to go.
ReplyDeleteWow--love it, love it, love it! It is a wonderful color combo. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to see that somebody else painted their GIRLS room BLUE! I did the same thing last year and have felt a little bad about it (because blue is usually for boys) even though I love how it turned out! I love how the light blue looks with white furniture and pink accents. You did a really good job on her room! I also used stuff I already had with only purchasing a few accessories. I love both the before and after. I think I could fall asleep so easily in that room...brilliant comfort. :) Red is my daughter's favorite color and I am not a huge fan of it in bedrooms, but just love how you added it in as an accent color.
ReplyDeleteLinda, that's an adorable redo for your daughter. Looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLove the color combo- bright and cheery. Love the hanging flowers- looks like a growing girl's room! :)
ReplyDeleteIt turned out fantastic. I love the touches you added, and shopping from the home is my new favorite thing.thanks for sharing the room and giving me great ideas.

ReplyDeleteJen @ Fiddle Dee Dee
it's absolutely LOVELY!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty room. I especially love what you did to the fish bowl. Great idea...
ReplyDeleteI love the room makeover! So cute, but I was wondering how you did one thing. The strecher frame recovered in scrapbooking paper...How did you do that? Is it simple? I have some wood that I use as frames and its 12x12 and I would love to cover some in scrapbook paper I have. It would be so COOL! So will you give the scoop on that one? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove all your projects, btw. They are seriously inspiring me to do more with my decor at home. I also took your advice of "going shopping in your home" and have done some nice changes with that idea! :)
Thoom looks so beautiful, your daughter must be thrilled!
ReplyDeleteLove Sophie's updated room, the April Cornell dress looks so sweet hanging from the shelf. I have the same shade from IKEA in my new studio, it is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so pretty! You did an amazing job!
ReplyDeleteAdorable!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, LOVE! And I love that you were bold enough to mix red and pink. I love them together and you just don't see it "done" a lot. Brava! :-)
ReplyDeleteYour rooms are just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteStop over to my blog as I have an award to give you. Hopefully you will place it on your blog along with all your gorgeous work.
