Exposed brick walls. How do I love these...? Let me count the ways:
- A good brick wall conjures up a sense of history in a home. The more aged the brick looks, the better.
- A brick wall needs no adornment. It stands alone, naked, and still looks great.
- A brick wall is the perfect feature wall. How can your eyes not be drawn to its strength and character?
- Warm colour is added to the room naturally. Brick warms up the space, so even an all white palette seems cozy.

- A brick feature wall makes a statement. Everything looks better against it, and it is the perfect backdrop for a great chandelier/lighting fixture, a stand-out piece of furniture, a great flooring material. Basically, it is the starting point to an amazing room.
- A brick wall naturally looks better uncluttered. It is the pattern, texture, colour - and it invites more, but in a restrained way. It can hold court with other great elements, but not too many. In essence, a textured wall - like brick- coaxes the eye to steer clear of visual clutter. It is our job to take the less is more cue.
***Note to self: Add a brick wall to my dream home list. What's on your list?

What's on my list?! Well if I had two hours I could probably cover it all!
ReplyDeleteA few highlights;
White/cream cabinet kitchen
Plank style wood flooring
Big front porch
Fire Pit (not one you buy at the store, one you clear out and build benches for on your land)
Oh brick walls are the best, my parents have one in the bedroom of their 300 year old cottage and it's fabulous. Not everyone likes them though, my aunt suggested they paint it white to 'blend' in. I thought my Dad was going to kick her out of the house :)
ReplyDeleteOn my wish list though:
Shaker Cream kitchen
A spa bathroom
A walk in closet ( a reason alone to move to Canada or the US!)
An Orangery
hand built storage in the dining room.
I've had a brick wall and I have loved my brick wall...it was a hearth wall actually, which I will probably miss like crazy this year with oil prices being what they are.
ReplyDeleteMy list now just includes a pellet stove. :D
I ADORE brick walls in a living space! We had one in our very 1st apartment, it ran the length of the whole apartment and was just fabulous! Everyone thought that little tiny apartment was so great & homey cause of that wonderful brick wall!
ReplyDeleteAs for a dream house list now...I covet mud rooms, with built in open locker style cabinets with shoe bin space underneath and purse/hats/mittens space above. Also, a old house with fabulous architechtural details and nooks and built ins...*sigh*!
I love it too , hard to find sadly.
ReplyDeleteMy list would include a spectacular staircase , coffered and beadboard ceilings all wood floors , a big soaker tub ang huge seperate shower , a main floor laundry , and big office , soapstone counters in the kitchen and open shelving , OH I CAN DREAM !
Hi Linda,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I love a brick wall. We once lived in a rental that had a brick wall in the kitchen and we painted it white. I loved it. I especially love the bedroom picture you showed. Thanks for reminding me how much I love a brick wall.
On my wish list, definitely a fireplace in the master bedroom.
LeAnn
My list ....a mouse-less house with and INDOOR staircase!
ReplyDeleteI know it is a long read on my blog - but you will not believe what happened to me yesterday!
These pictures are lovely! My wish list? That's easy...a 2nd full bath! :)
ReplyDeleteWe were fortunate enough to build a new home two years ago and I was able to add my much desired white woodwork (everyone does oak here), a front porch, and spa bathroom with soaker tub. I wish at the time I would have thought about doing a brick wall in the bedroom. Love that look and want that to be my next project!

Those brick walls look fabulous.
ReplyDeleteOn my wish list (beside an actual home of my own!) is a Pink Smeg fridge and an aga!

Ahhhh....my last (single gal) apartment had a brick wall in the bedroom (it was an old Catholic school so there was incredible detail). I remember when my dad first came over he thought that I'd moved to a slum...he couldn't imagine why anyone would want an unfinished brick wall in their home, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm also getting a good idea from that first photo...a sort of montage of old photos in one big frame. I've got a bunch of old photos in individual frames and not place to put them. I think I'll be on the hunt for a large vintagey frame now!
I'd love an exposed brick wall, too. *sigh* How lovely.
ReplyDeleteBoy, I know what you mean about struggling to keep up with all your favorite blogs. I'm so behind on my blog reading now. I was out of town for a few days, and then I was busy moving my blog to its own domain. It'll take me days to catch up with everybody.
Whenever you have a chance, come visit me in my new home. The address is http://hookedonhouses.net. And if you could update the links on your blog, I'd really appreciate it. I'm hosting an Amazon gift-card giveaway this week for bloggers who have added my new address to their sites by Friday, so be sure to stop by and enter!
Thanks! -Julia :-)
My garden room, where I now type and spend most of my time, was once a patio. Three sides are walls. One is brick. I have one of the blue and cream squared quilts I made hung across the brick wall. I love it.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I love brick! About the only thing my Hubby and I agree on for our dream home is brick!
ReplyDeleteI must say you are adorable! I just clicked over from my aunt's blog for the first time to explore your blog world and I am so pleased. I love the refreshing blue you use in your home. I too have a love for that beautiful color but I am trying to use it in more bold ways with bright contrasts of red to bring a little modern into the mix.
ReplyDeleteI too love brick walls and always remember my mom telling me about a house she lived in when she was young that had brick floors. I have a "fake" brick wall in the home we are currently renting - not cute - but it works.
On my list for sure is a white kitchen with open shelving on one of the walls so I can display all my white dishes. I have seen this in countless European magazines/blogs and also one of Martha Stewart's homes has this as well. I am in love with the idea!
Thank you for sharing a piece of your world with the rest of us!
that bedroom is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteof course if i had a brick wall it would probably bother me....but seeing tht i don't have one....i want one. :)
I LOVE exposed brick in rooms. Sadly, I have never had a house that even suggested an exposed brick...but a girl can dream, right? :)
ReplyDeleteCarrie
I actually have a couple of stone walls in my house! :) In my dream home I would want a HUGE island - with a sink. :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! When we were in Charleston, South Carolina this past weekend I noticed quite a few shops had left the brick exposed and it was beautiful! I've alway thought a brick wall in the living room would be gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteLoved the bedroom picture you found.
On my list:
*french door going out the back porch
*crown molding in the commom rooms of the house
*a gourmet chef's kitchen
Hope you are having a great week,
Jen
Love the brick!
ReplyDeletemy wish list:
a house fully furnished in pottery barn and my art.
Oh...
and a huge kitchen/dining room with tons of storage and marble countertops.
:D
I've always wanted an exposed brick wall in my livingroom.
ReplyDeleteOn my wish list right now are beautiful dark hardwood flooring throughout my home and a complete kitchen remodel. Someday!
I was so excited the other day..I found Matthew Mead's Halloween special in our tiny little grocery store! I almost felt like I "knew" him because of you :)
Brick wall is in the top five for me on my dream home list!! I also really want brick FLOOR in my kitchen! :)
ReplyDeleteThe photo of the bedroom just made my heart skip a beat! That is, quite possibly, the bedroom of my dreams...

I used to work in a home decor store that was in a 3 story brick building from the early 1900's. It had the most delicious exposed brick walls and I actually had dreams of living there! I envisioned drippy romantic candles placed in the spots with missing bricks how fabulous everything looked with those chalky bricks as a backdrop... but also on my list...
ReplyDelete- beat up vintage wood flooring
- leaded glass windows with the old wavy, bubbly glass
- built in storage hutches and cabinets with coats and coats of white chippy paint
- beadboard walls
- under the stairs hideaway for my kids
- BIG kitchen with a large island and a couch so I can talk to people while cooking
- a huge garden with lots of fluffy cottage roses and hydrangeas of all colors
- a large screened porch
- a tire swing
- big trees that drop fabulous fall leaves in all the yummy colors
- all in a place with crisp Autumn days where I can dress up in sassy boots and a fluffy scarf and maybe even have a White Christmas!
I could go on and on! Maybe I need to move to the east coast, I doubt I am going to find my dream home here in CA - LOL

Feature walls are an amazing addition to rooms. Apart from wallpaper and paint, elaborate geometrical designs on plaster is what one may consider also. Take a peek at www.alhambradesigns.com. Thanks

oooh I would love to renovate an old distressed red brick barn...cute distressed window shutters on the outside and beautiful window flower pots...our bedroom will keep the distressed red brick as a feature wall for a luxurious bed dripping in soft cream and ivory quilts..beautiful chandelier that captures the sun rays dancing across our bedroom on a late summer afternoon...a white vintage butler tray distressed (ofcorse lol) and lined with a wallpaper that resembles an English cottage rose garden for the sunday breakfast in bed tradition. Home filled with sweet smelling lilacs, gardenias, hydrangeas...with rose petals adorning the natural wooden floorboards leading to my full sized claw tub...beautiful linens that tell you a story when you pick them in from the washing line smelling so fresh and crisp..
ReplyDeleteA French cottage country kitchen with distressed cream custom made cupboards from floor to ceiling, and a beautiful showcase for my antique pastel tea sets...an old brick pizza oven in my kitchen as well as a small fire place to light on those magical wintery nights...candle light and chandeliers dress all the rooms..
Beautiful large fireplace in every room possible, dressed in a dry hydrangea garland in the summertime...ahhhh I can dream about this home for the rest of my life lol
